My first proper day
I got there at 8:15. Just in time for the team briefing.
I then read through the referral sheet, and read the patient notes, Collateral history on the EPR (Electronic patient records) and filled this in on the sheet. Then I went down on the wards with Michelle; she's my PE, a band 7 OT, working 0.5 on MAU and 0.5 on KOPAL.
MAU is the Medical Admissions Unit and KOPAL is the King's older person advice and liason service, and I am on both.
First we went to a MDM, a multi disiplinary meeting, aboutt he discharge of patients on two wards.
I then spent the morning on the wards doing KOPAL assessments, reviews and case notes. Basically just seeing the patient and making sure they are seeing the services the need to, and aren't in bed for 2 weeks before referrals begin.
I learnt about reading sats and obs, and how it can be really important to do so before seeing a patient on the ward because it will tell you whether they are well enough. For example, if someone's Bp is low then they are going to get dizzy etc, and therefore physical assessments probably won't be happening, so therefore it may be better to write up a note saying the notes have been reviewed, but due to patients health, they will be seen tomorrow.
Then it was lunch... yummy! I'm not getting lost going there now. And hopefully will get used to the massive amount of stairs I have to climb frequently throughout the day.
After lunch there was another briefing. I looked through the referrals sheet and Michelle asked me to read the history of two patients and to present to her. We did doubles - visiting with a physio as well, which was interesting.
I met a bariatric patient, a stroke patient, a multiple fracture patient and a patient with RSV. The latter was in isolation, and therefore I had to don a mask and other PPE. It was all really interesting.
When I had questions sometimes Michelle answered, and explained in great detail, and other times she told me to remember what I'd asked and to research it. Which is what I did for the last half an hour - I researched all the terms I didn't understand. I think she's going to be a really good teacher.
I have some training on Thursday I think, EPR training, means I will get log in details for the computer system, and I now have a locker.
I was absolutely shattered when I got in, so I had a little sleep. Then I made something to eat, but there's not a microwave here, so it's all gotta be done on the gas hob...which is a lil annoying cos it takes longer...but at least gas is quicker than electric. I need to go shopping friday, on my half day, I'm looking forward to going exploring!!
