Third day!
Third day
Today was a good day!
It was my last day of commuting from Oxford, which was a pain in the bum, I don't even those that commute for work everyday. I survived the commuter train with 3 bags, even if I didn't get a seat. Today my practice educator J had to go and assess a patient on another ward, so I was left by myself. So I lead a reading group, with the help of a support worker,4 patients attended. It was good as it was my first meaningful contact with the patients. I felt it went well, I got good feedback from the patients and the support worker, as well as that which was told to J. I did feel awkward as I didn't know how much prompting to give the patients or when to fill the silences and when to leave them. But the story brought up some sensitive issues and I felt that I dealt with the both successfully and appropriately.
Then I left the hospital to move into my new accommodation. It is just across the road, a 5 minute walk to the hospital. Right next to a small precinct, a Chinese and a chippy etc. The room is almost identical to the one I had in halls, even the bed is the same! Although it had just been redecorated and smelt of fresh paint when I entered. The kitchen has a small lounge with a tv, and is nice enough. I am sharing the flat with 3 blokes, which came in handy already when I couldn't make the shower work due to the pipe being blocked with lime scale.
Then back to the hospital, and had a quick lunch in the hospital canteen, £3 for a veg lasagne, side salad and garlic bread. Before I went back to the ward and co facilitated the quiz group. I really feel welcomed by all the staff, which is lovely, and am not made to feel like a spare part just the to follow J around like a puppy dog, I feel like part of the team.
Have just finished unpacking, and now I'm going to watch Benjamin Button.
(EDIT: didn't watch Benjamin Button as it's 2hours and 40 mins, and the beginning was boring...that will be one for a weekend when I have nothing better to do!)
