A whole new adventure...

An expression of my thoughts and feelings on my OT journey, both personal and professsional.

Today was an OT day.

Today I was the only 'OT staff' on the ward, so I got to be in charge, woo!!
It was quite nice as I got to demonstrate all the skills I've acquired and honed during this placement so hopefully the other ward members will give me good feedback tomorrow.

Firstly I had a 1:1 session with a guy about some cooking sessions in order to build up his skill and confidence levels prior to discharge; we formulated some goals and agreed on some recipes.
Then I facillitated a reading group, which went really well as some of the newer people joined us, which was the first time they had engaged in OT on the ward. The session felt really good as the discussion flowed well and everyone was engaging and contributing to it. Also quite a few people asked/volunteered to read passages from the story or poems which was great to see! Had really great input from two of the newer people who actually read out some lyrics form GiGi between them, which was brilliant!!

I completed an impromptu kitchen assessment with one of the ladies, which was interesting! But it's also quite disappointing to write up a report that details a high level of risk for someone.  Then I particiated in a MDT discussion about one the the guys, and gave the OT feedback, and suggested some assessments that could be of use, such as the allens cognitive levels, which will be carried out next week.

And finally I facilitated a quiz group with healthy snacks...Everyone seemed to enjoy it as there was lots of engagement between them, and people were in good humour. I finished the day by writing lots of notes. I really felt like I was doing OT for the first time during my placement.

Tomorrow I am on another ward shadowing another OT which I'm looking forward to :)

xx
